You Found Me
I'm Dayci, an artist living and painting in rural Nebraska. While the world moves further into a digital age, my work will continue to contribute to authentic and hand made, man made craft.
Here's The Story...
I grew up on the wide-open plains of rural Nebraska. Living where the landscape outside your backdoor is intensely immersive and the horizon is 80% sky changes the way you go about life. You learn to notice, incorporate, and observe. You learn to appreciate the stillness, and it calls attention to the way nature changes around you.
I spent most of my childhood outside, wandering about and playing pretend, and grew up in a home where creativity was stoked in me like a fire. My mom began painting murals when I was very young, and naturally, that called for her only daughter to become her little helper. At first, I was priming walls and blocking in color, but as I aged, my role grew and advanced with me. In high school, I became further involved in the design and planning process and eventually moved from filling in shapes to executing details.
After graduating high school at 17, when the time came for college, I chose to pursue a business degree to save myself from falling into the “starving artist” trope. I believed the difference between a successful and starving artist was knowing how to market yourself. So off I went, to learn and develop what would later become Dace Murals.
Most of my inspiration starts with my own photography or rural Nebraska life from my point of view. I take what I see and mix it with something more imaginative or metaphorical to deepen my work and give another layer of interpretive meaning. My dreams play a part in this, too. I've always had a vivid imagination, and the things I dream often give direction to what I create. Sometimes it's a particular image, an atmosphere, or something I can't quite explain, but it stays with me until I find a way to bring it into the physical world. I find that the line between what I've observed and what I've imagined is often where my most meaningful work begins.
While murals are a big part of what I do, I create beyond walls too. My practice is ever-growing across as many mediums as I can get my hands on. I create small-scale acrylic paintings on just about any surface, from glass and wood to metal and canvas, alongside ink and watercolor works.
